I recently took some film of the olympic sports weightroom at byu where the throwers here lift. All the olympic sports lift here and the football, baseball, and basketball teams lift in a newer weightroom. I was wondering how this compared to other schools around the US and clubs around the world.
Looks pretty dark and dreary to me. No windows? Also seems pretty bare. Nothing on the walls to inspire or educate? Personally I don't like the platforms being attached to the power racks. If one is really going to use the platforms as they are meant to be used, more space is needed. The racks can be inhibiting. Having said that, it looks like more platforms would be helpful for handling as many athletes as you describe. Your dumbbell selection also seems pretty limited. Anyway, just a few quick observations from what I can see on the films.Obviously the quality of coaching can enhance or detract from any weight room. THey can set the tone and inspire great workouts. The Bulgarians among others have proven that it is not the facilities that make the program. How is the training atmosphere there?
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree with Mr. Anonymous above. Having actually been in that weightroom several times, he is right. It is dark and depressing. No evidence of tradition on the walls or anywhere. I have also been in most of the weight rooms in the MWC as well as many others across the country. I would rate BYU in the bottom 25% or so. Like has been said, atmosphere is more important than equipment. While the BYU equipment may have some shortcomings, it could be adequate if the total atmosphere was right. The times I visited, there seemed to be almost a total disregard of the athletes by the "strength and conditioning coaches." Of course maybe I was just there on a bad day. lol

How many Olympians and All-Americans has BYU produced? I know it's more than a few. There whould be some evidence of that in the training enviroment. I hear that many choose to train elsewhere. Too bad.

It is not the weight room that makes the thrower BYU is much nicer than the Hungarian weight room at the hammer facility.
ReplyDeleteyour already know my opinion leif lol-oliver w.
ReplyDeletewhen are you going to come join me and lift in the cage? lol oliver w.
ReplyDeleteI've talked to the strength coaches about putting up a record board, but the problem with that is they have never kept records before except for football so we have no idea besides rumors of what the records are. I have even mentioned them putting up a mural of the throwers but that idea was quickly shot down. T
ReplyDeleteLeif,
ReplyDeleteIts because they dont want to admit that the throwers are stronger than the football players
